[...] He is angered by the concern and response of the other detectives, infuriated by his son who continues to insist that he must see a doctor about his memory lapses, irritated by his wife and her worrying, but most of all, angry at himself and scared to death that he really is losing his mind. Shubin (also the author of the current Hard Case Crime offering WITNESS TO MYSELF) does a great job here depicting Lehman’s repeated problems recalling certain names and details, yet being able to remember other seemingly unimportant trivia. And he’s also good at having Lehman express his intense frustration at what seems to be happening to him. Lehman refuses to believe he’s getting old, but he knows it’s the truth, and just hopes that these occasional lapses when recalling names isn’t an indicator of something much more serious.
I'm a fan of Hard Case Crime, and this book sounds like a wonderful addition to their inventory. Violent, suspenseful and poignant? Definitely sounds like it's worth a read.
