Being a huge fan of Greg Rucka’s day job in comics and also having read the two novels he wrote that followed his QUEEN & COUNTRY characters, I knew going into PATRIOT ACTS never to underestimate his style.
But here comes the problem for someone who is far behind in his Atticus Kodiak series, of which this is the sixth book: With this novel literally starting 20 minutes after the last, the first few chapters will ruin any previous installments you may not have read yet. Major characters are killed off, all within a short time after starting.
Well, I’ll still read the others in the series – KEEPER has been on my to-read pile for a long time – even though I now know the outcome of some of the storylines. I’m trying to be vague about the details, but once the housecleaning is all said and done, the book moves to its own plot: that of why bodyguard Kodiak and crew are being hunted down.
If you’ve never read any of the other books, I suggest pushing through those first few chapters, since what comes next is a total thrill ride, with Atticus and his accomplice trying their hardest to track down the man who first gave them up. PATRIOT ACTS spans three years – a slow-going process of finding out where the traitor is hiding.
Rucka peppers the book with great sequences of action and suspense, but again, let me make it perfectly clear: Read the books in order or at least the book that precedes this one. As much as I love his comic work, it’s his novels where he truly shines, with no restrictions whatsoever. –Bruce Grossman

Never read any of these, but I’m pretty intrigued now. Might have to try to read some of them.
