S.J. Rozan’s IN THIS RAIN is political noir, and will be an entertaining read for those who love stories about the building trade or political intrigue. Ann Montgomery, a previously disgraced building inspector because of the actions of her partner, is determined to clear both her and her innocent partner’s name. The chance comes when she’s put on a case that seems to implicate multibillionaire Walter Glybenhall, one of Ann’s long-standing nemeses.
But her careful and deliberate investigation seems to go all haywire when Glybenhall can prove he was wrongly arrested. Now he’s suing the city for $50 million, and Ann herself for $5 million.
These kinds of choking political traps are sprung throughout the book, and sometimes it comes to seem that everyone is dirty, and every situation seems inescapable. So the book has a constricting feel, only leavened by Rozan’s excellent descriptive powers of a garden that features prominently in the story.
Her main character’s irrational and often dangerous actions and an overly complex plot may be a downer, but the writing itself is smooth and readable. IN THIS RAIN is recommended for fans of mysteries set in New York. –Mark Rose
