You're doing yourself a disservice by dismissing Huston's vampire novels out of hand. They're not Anne Rice stuff. I love the Hank Thompson books too, but the Joe Pitt books are terrific in their own right.

Anyway. Stark. Finally! At first I was just going to fill in the gaps in my collection, but having new copies is worth it.

Yeah, Stark is right up there with Elmore Leonard. I wish these guys were immortal - of course they are - but in the sense that they could go on writing forever!

I recently came across a noir crime trilogy which is in the same league, by someone named Charlie Huston. Oddly, and most unfortunately, his other books are evidently about vampires, a truly boring subject. But these three (Caught Stealing, Six Bad Things, A Dangerous Man) are really in the Stark/Leonard tradition, and will keep you up late. They should be read in order (not the above order, the real order).

this is absolutely amazing news! i've read up to The Outfit, but most of the Stark stuff are pretty hard to come by. The Hunter took me a few weeks of looking before i gave up and had a copy imported from Australia!

Stark (i prefer the Stark stuff to the Westlake books) really is addictive. that's both good and bad, because you tear through his books in a few hours and instantly want to read another.

Fantastic work, Bruce. Thank you.
And folks: the announcement of the reissuing of these books easily falls under the category of "Reasons To Go On Living." Now more readers can discover these classic works. And the rest of us can store our crumbling paperback copies for safe keeping and enjoy new copies. Well done, University of Chicago Press.
