Bruce,

Just returned from a week vacation in sunny San Diego. Have to admit: I missed reading your column this past Wednesday. Found a couple of bookstores out on Hwy 101 and picked up a Perry Mason and a Shell Scott novel. Upon Googling “Stark House” I discovered that Wade Miller, both met, went to…San Diego State University. I knew there was a reason why I liked Hard Case Crime’s “Branded Woman” so much.

Carny Kill is good, but the best unsung Black Lizard as far as I’m concerned is the author’s Swamp Sister. Fukl-on noir treasure hunt through the swampy backwoods accompanied by duplicitous Daisy Dukes, untrustworthy companions, and a very competent and dangerous villain. Great stuff!

Carnies are spooky to me, too. I think of them as hoboes with ambition. A hobo will slit your throat with the lid of a tin can if you stumble across him in the switching yard, but carnies actively seek you out. Spooky!
