As the holidays near, the number of notable new releases decreases. But here are two we managed to dig up.
• This week’s biggie is MARY MARY. Just hearing that title out loud makes me wonder why it’s not subtitled WHY YOU BUGGIN’? It’s the seriously oversaturated James Patterson’s 11th novel featuring detective Alex Cross, whom Morgan Freeman brought to life in the passable films KISS THE GIRLS and ALONG CAME A SPIDER. Apparently all that movie money isn’t enough for Patterson to live on, because in addition to bestselling thrillers, he skirts welfare dependency by cranking out sappy love stories that even my wife deems unreadable, co-written mysteries with questionable input and even tales of angels for young adults. Nothing wrong with writing a lot of books … if they were good.
• Ray Morton’s KING KONG: THE HISTORY OF A MOVIE ICON is the latest in a recent flood of KONG-related books. With illustrations, this one covers every KONG film in detail. We haven’t counted, but we think there are fewer of those in history than books James Patterson put out in 2005. Look for our review soon. UPDATE: One day later, I learned this has been pushed back to Dec. 12, so our review will have to wait until closer to publication date.
