Women of Marvel

women of marvel reviewOne reason comics are so popular with geeks: big-breasted women. Geeks, we give you WOMEN OF MARVEL.

Jokiness aside, Marvel’s anthology lassos 10 first issues, first appearances or otherwise noteworthy happenings involving its lovely lasses, each of whom have testosterone-style powers to balance out their estrogen-laced looks.

All the good stuff is right upfront – no pun intended, but I’m now patting myself on the back for it – with treats from the ’70s. This includes THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #86, in which that red-haired Russian hottie known as Black Widow gets a new costume to better accentuate her bite.

Then there’s the first issue of THE CAT, basically Marvel’s 1972 answer to Catwoman, and equally as campy. The debut of SHANNA THE SHE-DEVIL follows, and while it’s nice to see this talking Tarzan wannabe do her thing, I much prefer the mute, ass-kicking, loincloth-shunning recent reinvention by Frank Cho.

An unremarkable first issue of MS. MARVEL comes next (the title never got any better), followed by the unintentional ultra-hilarity that is DAZZLER #1. Basically a disco superhero with magnetic roller skates, a mic and a miniature radio, all of which she uses to “dazzle” her enemies into insanity. It has to be one of the single stupidest ideas in comics history. Perhaps fiction history. Or perhaps all of recorded storytelling, and I’m including cavemen carving pictographs into rock walls.

After that, the lineup gets loosey-goosey, with an AVENGERS issue thrown in to merit an appearance from She-Hulk, and a handful of X-MENs from the ’80s, which seem picked at random to give showcases to Storm, Rogue and Jubilee.

I wouldn’t pay full price for WOMEN OF MARVEL, but there’s enough kitsch here to merit picking it up at a discount. –Rod Lott
