After dumping all over Dynamite Entertainment’s flaccid attempt at launching a BATTLESTAR GALACTICA comic book, I was prepared to do the same with HIGHLANDER #0, their 25-cent prequel for an all-new series based on the inexplicably popular film series starring Christopher Lambert. Having never been able to finish a single HIGHLANDER film, I’m certainly no fan.
Which is why I was surprised to have liked this issue (or half-issue, as the case may be). Oh, I can’t tell you a lick of what’s going on β something involving swords and, um, swords β but there was enough colorful action, well-drawn by Lee Moder, to hold my interest for all of the story’s dozen pages.
But much better is the five-page preview of THE LONE RANGER that directly follows. It looks bloody and picturesque, as a good Western comic should be. I likely won’t ever seek out a HIGHLANDER trade, but this RANGER holds extreme promise. One wishes Dynamite had cut down on all the in-house ads (eight pages!) for their various projects (RED SONJA, the aforementioned GALACTICA, DARKMAN VS. ARMY OF DARKNESS, XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS) and given more to RANGER β a radical reinvention, from what I could tell, and one worth following. βRod Lott

To be fair, Highlander did win the Acadamy Award. For best movie ever made.
