Brave New World

brave new world reviewOut of the ashes of DC Comics’ recent INFINITE CRISIS storyline emerges BRAVE NEW WORLD, an 80-page one-shot that introduces six new series (all but one limited) for a bargain-priced buck.

And here’s what you get:
• A.J. Lieberman and Al Barrionuevo’s MARTIAN MANHUNTER, the green-skinned alien who now looks more like his animated JUSTICE LEAGUE self than Kojak on St. Patrick’s Day as he has in the past. The surprise ending lends the character some much-needed grit.
• Bruce Jones and Renato Guedes’ OMAC, a strange, MATRIX-y sci-fi thing that somehow involves a motorcycle chase, hard drugs and a Superman cameo. At this point, too vague for its own good.
• Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti and Daniel Acuña’s UNCLE SAM & THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS, a superteam that’s not exactly in favor with the American government. Its political themes are certainly timely, so it will be interesting to see where this goes, as it ends just as a story gets started.
• Steve Niles and Justiniano’s THE CREEPER, a monstrous do-gooder who can’t get respect for preventing a senator’s assassination because he looks like a hideous mutant freak. This segment is the most self-contained of the bunch, and with Niles’ touch in the horror genre, this series holds great promise.
• Gail Simone, John Byrne and Trevor Scott’s THE ALL-NEW ATOM, a more modern take on the molecular-sized superhero, here on a FANTASTIC VOYAGE-style mission. Nifty, if one-note.
• Judd Winick and Howard Porter’s THE TRIALS OF SHAZAM!, which asks what would happen if Captain Marvel and the rest of the Marvel Family were suddenly stripped of their powers? I assume the series will answer the question “why?,” and it’s one I actually look forward to.

All the art is top-notch, even though the styles greatly vary, but Porter deserves singling out in this one. It’s nice that DC allows readers to get a taste of what’s to come for next to nothing. Even if only half the book proves your thing, you’re still getting your 100 pennies’ worth. –Rod Lott
