Here are a few new titles which you might be spending any leftover Christmas ca$h on this week:
• SEAS OF CRISIS is Joe Buff’s latest submarine-set military thriller set in the near future, picking up where STRAITS OF POWER left off. I’m a sucker for submarines.
• Douglas Clegg kicks off a new series – and ventures a bit from his usual horror fare – with MORDRED, BASTARD SON, his take on the Arthurian legends. ‘Tis the first of a planned trilogy centered on Mordred, the love child of King Arthur and Morgan le Fay. We should have a review sometime between soon and before Book 2 hits.
• For an Arthur of a far different kind (as in Conan Doyle), there’s ARTHUR & GEORGE, Julian Barnes’ novel of the real-life relationship between the Sherlock Holmes creator and a young Indian man wrongly accused of animal mutilation, who was freed from prison thanks to Doyle’s investigations. If I hadn’t already read the true story, I’d probably be all over this.
• And speaking of Sherlock, he’s one of more than 25 stories featured in Maxim Jakubowski’s THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF VINTAGE WHODUNNITS (isn’t that one N too many?). This anthology features classic detective tales from 1850-1905, including those penned by Mark Twain, Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, O. Henry and Edgar Allan Poe. Not too shabby!
