The critics at Time magazine have assembled a sure-to-be-controversial lists of the “all-time best 100 novels” (in the English language and published since 1923, that is, the year the magazine was born). The list includes the obvious share of established classics, from THE CATCHER IN THE RYE to TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.
But the newsworthiness of the list isn’t in the obvious, but the unexpected. And no, we’re not talking about the inclusion of THE LORD OF THE RINGS.
We’re talking about the inclusion of pulp fiction (Raymond Chandler’s THE BIG SLEEP), a graphic novel (Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ WATCHMEN) and not one but two doses of cyberpunk (William Gibson’s NEUROMANCER and Neal Stephenson’s SNOW CRASH). There are other BOOKGASM-friendly classics new and old to be found, and you can read the whole list – as well as the critics’ explanation of their process – right here.
