What the Oscars are to the movies, the Quills Readers Choice Awards hopes to be for books. The first annual awards show will be televised on NBC Oct. 22, to what I presume will be spectacularly low ratings.
Everyone can vote on the awards, including you – yes, you! Some of the notable books nominated in the 20 categories include JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORRELL, ZORRO, MARVEL 1602, THE HISTORIAN, THE DARK TOWER VII, WORMWOOD, THE CLOSERS, THE COMPLETE PEANUTS, ABARAT and the latest volumes of the HARRY POTTER and LEMONY SNICKET series.
To vote – only once, people! – and for more information, visit the Quills website.

It’s amazing how many books are on here I never heard of. Rod, can you list the best of the one’s you’ve read?
There are three I can recommend without reservations:
• JONATHAN STRANGE – This may have been the highlight of last winter for me. I totally got lost (in a good way) in this novel, and this comes from someone who generally dislikes fantasy. I really hope Ms. Clarke doesn’t take 10 years to write the follow-up.
• MARVEL 1602 – Neil Gaiman is a master of just about anything he does, and this graphic novel which reimagines Marvel superheroes in the 17th century is no exception.
• THE HISTORIAN – I reviewed this a few days ago. If you can ignore the hype, chances are you’ll really like it.
There are a few titles on that I’m iffy about (like THE TRAVELER, which doesn’t deserve to be on there) and many I haven’t read, but am curious about, like THE CLOSERS and ABARAT.
