One of my favorite books of last year was THE KNOW-IT-ALL: ONE MAN’S HUMBLE QUEST TO BECOME THE SMARTEST PERSON IN THE WORLD, Esquire editor-at-large A.J. Jacobs’ hilarious, true-life account of the year he spent reading all 32 volumes of the ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA, from start to finish.
He’s been working on a screenplay based on the book for MEN IN BLACK director Barry Sonnenfeld. But that’s not Jacobs’ only brush with Hollywood. In the past couple of weeks, he’s been on a roll.
First, his KNOW-IT-ALL follow-up – the self-explanatory YEAR OF LIVING BIBLICALLY – won’t even be out until next year, but Paramount Pictures has already scooped up the rights. Then yesterday, it’s announced that his brand-new Esquire article on outsourcing all his personal duties – from answering e-mail to calling his parents – to an overseas firm for a month has sold to MEET THE FOCKERS director Jay Roach.
So right now, everything Jacobs touches turns to insane amounts of cash. Somewhere, Joel Stein weeps.
