Danny Dutch

From Sparkplug Comic Books, David King’s DANNY DUTCH is a funny beast, if not funny. His four-panel comic strips remind one faintly of Charles Schulz, but with a cast of depressive adults spouting existential questions and statements. The joke is that there are hardly any jokes — the strips rarely end with a punchline or resolve.

Example: Danny pitches someone in a planning meeting: “It’ll be called ‘Joketown.’ When you’re there you’ll be disposed to laughter! A world of glee … because there is nothing else to do.” Annnnnd scene.

It’s enjoyable, even if it’s not meant to be entirely lucid. The funniest happens to be its crudest, in which Danny and two pals “have some fun by drawing.” They share the fruits of their labor: One has drawn a “boner length contest”; another, a “poop volume contest”; and Danny, a “pussy depth contest.” Hey, I never said it was G-rated. —Rod Lott
