Each chapter in the book follows about the same pattern: The authors define the monster in question and trace its history through folklore and fiction, including books, short stories, films, comics, etc. Historical highlights of the creature in fiction are not always presented in the form of boring lists, but discussed at enough length to cover the subject, but not overwhelm the reader. Most of the judgments are clearly stated, but there are times when I wondered if the writers were damning with tongue-in-cheek praise. Take this comment on the paranormal romances of Anne Rice: “Anne Rice owned this genre for years, chunking out huge novels filled with an ornate — even rococo — style that indulged in a lushness of language that was as sensual as the subject matter.”
If there are variations on the monster in question in the literature, Maberry and Kramer provide us with a basic, dictionary-style exploration of the subsets.
I suspect that many readers will already own a volume or two that covers much of this material. Where this book differs from everything else out there is in the dozens of lengthy quotations from current producers of stories and films utilizing these supernatural protagonists. One page is filled with a quote from John Carpenter. Here’s a half-page from Herschell Gordon Lewis, and another from Ramsey Campbell.
I also like the fact that many of these quotes come from contemporary writers and artists. Finding out what Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft thought about horror isn’t all that difficult, but you can spend a lot of time online trying to glean the same information from today’s indie filmmakers or comics scribes. I wish the book were indexed so tracking these quotes down would be easier, but alas. The illustrations, both classic and modern, add a lot to the atmosphere.
At 17 bucks, THEY BITE is a bargain, and along with the earlier volume by these authors, it makes a terrific companion to the more classically oriented PENGUIN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HORROR AND THE SUPERNATURAL from 1986. —Doug Bentin
