Good review. At first read I wasn't sure if I liked the novel or not (being a crime fiction fanatic- both reading and writing). But after I realized I wasn't going to forget this horror gem, I gave it a second going over. Great stuff! The creepiness of The Ruins is in the subtle scenes not the out-and-out gore. (the building tensions between the students, the ominous, flippant conversations about death and killing, the symbolism of the rabid dog and zombie-like villagers etc.)
