I read “The Lake” and I really loved it. Theres many surprises indeed since things don’t turn out the way it was expected to.

It had every opportunity to be great, if Laymon had lived long enough to do some rewrites and edits. I hope that doesn’t come across as crass – it’s just not as tightly wound as some of his others. It feels a bit incomplete.

Yes, TO WAKE THE DEAD is known as AMARA if you’re not in the U.S. (and judging by your spelling of “favourite,” I’m guessing not). It’s one of the three unpublished novels he left behind, with the other two being THE LAKE and INTO THE FIRE (which I haven’t read).

TO WAKE THE DEAD was the first Laymon I read, and still the best. I don’t know if it’s because I’m a sucker for mummy stories or not.

TO WAKE THE DEAD was originally published as Amara, I believe. Never read that one.

I wasn’t familiar with THE STAKE until you mentioned it, but I just looked it up and it sounds really good. Looks like it’s out of print, too.

For the record, my favorite continues to be TO WAKE THE DEAD. But I’ve only read four or five Laymon novels so far, so there are many more that could be better.

Laymon was a great author, but some of his books were hit or miss. My favourite was The Stake.
