Saw: Rebirth

saw rebirth reviewNow that SAW II has hit DVD, you can learn all about how John Kramer went from ordinary guy to that devious serial killer known as Jigsaw in SAW: REBIRTH, a one-shot comic from IDW Publishing. (Some copies of SAW II come packaged with this comic.)

Except that if you’ve seen SAW (and isn’t that fun to say?), you already know the story: Man gets death sentence via cancer, man decides to “teach” people the value of life via crafty booby traps. The only thing you didn’t know from the films was that Kramer also lost his job and girlfriend prior to being told he was going to die, but that revelation doesn’t exactly merit a read. There’s nothing wrong per se with the writing or even the art; the whole prequel concept is at fault when there’s just nothing really to tell.

Unless you’re a SAW completist (and I suppose there is such a thing), REBIRTH is going to excite you as much as afterbirth. Besides, it’s only horrific for about a page or two, which is about 30 too few for its bloodthirsty target. –Rod Lott
