With the Thursday Next books you have to start at the beginning, and if you’re smart you’ll stop after The Eyre Affair, which is great. The remaining three books become so convoluted that it’s impossible to explain. Fforde couldn’t possibly make them any more confusing. I mean, not only can characters walk in and out of works of fiction, but they also time travel. Using one of those plot devices would have been confusing enough. Both is a bit much.
