...It was right at the end of part one & it was just one of those generic lines:

"...Do I kill you or do I let you go? Hmmmmm? What do you think Mr. Kline? Shall I let you go? Shall we flip a coin?"

I think it was the mention of killing followed by the "hmmm?" that triggered that small psychotic reaction...which led to slight convulsions & tremors of laughter.

This is/was a great read & though I'm not a huge fan of short stories, I'm definitely going to be picking up more of Evenson's work. Almost seemed like a book J.G. Ballard might have written if he were to try his hand at some kind of Pulp Noir.

I finally got around to starting an Amazon wish-list simply because of this book & this author....& your recommendation & this site!

ok....so I bought this on your recommendation & immediately ripped into it & just as I'm little less than half-way through, completely into it, the character "Borchert" says something that completely comes out like a Stewie line from "Family Guy"....needless to say, the book has been turned completely on it's head. Every line is playing in that smartass inflatable voice & I want to scream...

Television is POISON!!

Did you know Brian Evenson used to be a Mormon? When he published Altmann's Tongue he was a professor at Brigham Young University. He was told if he wanted to keep his job he had to promise never to write another book like that again. So he left both BYU and the LDS Church. Good for him, I say. No one should have to censor themselves like that.

I don't think I could ever read this one, though. I don't consider myself a particularly sensitive reader, but Last Days sounds like a bit much for me.
