King’s CELL coming to theaters

stephen king cell reviewEli Roth, writer/director of the cult-fave CABIN FEVER and the current hit HOSTEL, has signed a deal to shoot an adaptation of Stephen King’s latest bestseller, CELL, for the big screen.

Variety reports Roth will direct the film for the Weinsteins’ Dimension Films following production of HOSTEL 2. While I wasn’t crazy for King’s novel about cellular technology turning people into zombies, I love Roth’s sensibilities and think he can fashion a film out of it that can be both intense and fun. Certainly it will be better than the recent slate of weak King adaptations. (RIDING THE BULLET, anyone? Trust me, you don’t.)

UPDATE: Dimension is further getting into the King business, hiring Lasse Hallström to direct John Cusack in an adaptation of the haunted hotel story “1408,” from his EVERYTHING’S EVENTUAL collection.
