the wall review jeff longWith the holidays out of the way, the new release train is chugging strong once more. Here are this week’s most notable titles:

THE WALL is the latest thriller from Jeff Long (YEAR ZERO, THE RECKONING), this one concerning a pair of rock climbers who encounter a dead body … and a pesky caveman. Sounds cool to me.

THE HOSTAGE is W.E.B. Griffin’s newest military actioner, and the second in his “Presidential Agent” series dealing with Homeland Security, following 2004′s BY ORDER OF THE PRESIDENT. Expect it to sell well, despite a most hideous cover.

• Ted Dekker offers SHOWDOWN, a quasi-Western thriller about a stranger who comes to a sleepy Colorado town with one strange monastery. Like Dekker’s previous efforts (THR3E, OBSESSED), this one has Christian elements weaved into the narrative, a la LEFT BEHIND (but hopefully much better written).

• Speculative fiction is the main course of FUTURESHOCKS, an anthology edited by Lou Anders (he of the alternative-future collection LIVE WITHOUT A NET) in which authors such as Kevin Anderson, Mike Rensick, Harry Turtledove and Alan Dean Foster answer the question “What terror does tomorrow hold?” With that lineup, it might be worth finding out the answer.

• Finally, Marjorie M. Lui’s X-MEN: DARK MIRROR is the latest in a new line of original novels featuring Marvel Comics characters (editions thus far have starred Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and Wolverine). Believe it or not, there are 45 different X-MEN titles – from graphic novels to kids’ activity books – being released between now and May, when X-MEN 3 hits theaters. Not including this one.
