The Quest for the Trilogy

quest for trilogy reviewMel Odom’s oddly titled THE QUEST FOR THE TRILOGY really is about a quest for three books: tomes written by the Grandmagister Lamplighter that explain a volatile mystery affecting the relationship between humans, elves, dwarves and dwellers.

A thousand years ago, the races were united in order to defeat the goblinkin. But at the Battle of Fell’s Keep, Master Oskarr the dwarf supposedly betrayed the alliance and the races fell into disarray. Now, as the world is threatened once more, our heroes must find the truth of what happened at the battle, reunite the three lost magical weapons that were instrumental in beating back the goblinkin, and in the process, attempt to reform harmony among the races. A tall order.

But this long, involved epic delivers on that promise. Our book begins after the LORD OF THE LIBRARIES series, and the structure of this new add-on trilogy is one of its biggest faults. The story starts with an adventure of Grandmagister Jugh, who finds the first book written by his mentor, Grandmagister Lamplighter. We then read the entirety of Lamplighter’s book which recounts his adventures, and then this formula is repeated twice more. But if you can get over that hump, you’ll be treated to a wondrous and well-thought-out world with all manner of dangerous beasts, magical spells and doughty heroes.

It reads like a really, really good DUNGEONS & DRAGONS adventure. I would have felt privileged to participate in a campaign like this in my gaming days, traveling from the Cinder Clouds Islands, retreating to the Vault of All Known Knowledge and clashing wits and sword with Kulik Borghan. A fun, fantastical romp. –Mark Rose
