Neil Gaiman’s best-selling young-adult fantasy CORALINE (which, if you ask us, is A-OK for adults, too) is coming to the big screen as a stop-motion animation feature, to be directed by Henry Selick of THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH and – hear us out, please – the underrated comedy MONKEYBONE.
Focus Features, which will handle worldwide distribution, announced the movie at the current Cannes Film Festival. Dakota Fanning of THE WAR OF THE WORLDS will voice the title character, who walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life – only much better. But when this wondrously off-kilter, fantastical adventure turns dangerous and her counterfeit parents try to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination and bravery to get back home. Gaiman’s original 2002 novel, inspired by his own daughter’s sense of adventure, won a host of honors, including the prestigious Hugo Award.
James Schamus of Focus Features said, “This is a project that filmgoers of all ages are eagerly anticipating, and it is fielding a dream team to craft it. The work of two visionary storytellers, Henry and Neil, as interpreted by the world’s leading young actor, will make for a unique movie experience that we are thrilled to be bringing to audiences everywhere.”
Selick is a great choice for a director if they aim to adapt CORALINE’s spooky illustrations by Gaiman’s SANDMAN collaborator Dave McKean. And just when you think this project can’t sound any cooler, it does: They Might Be Giants will be providing music for the film.
