When your kids have tired of cute mice and cartoon dogs, perhaps it’s time to introduce them to more fantastic fauna. AN ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO MYTHICAL CREATURES will do the trick. Written by Anita Ganeri, the slim hardcover will transport them into other, more imaginative worlds.
David West’s art is computer-generated, giving the 2-D pages a semi-3-D look, depicting everything from giant octopi and shapeshifters to Medusa and chimera. Each monster — and there are dozens upon dozens here — is accompanied by a block of text, rarely more than a paragraph, explaining origins and features. It all seems best suited for grade schoolers to middle schoolers, especially those already into fantasy fiction. —Rod Lott

Is there a better, more scholarly book of this sort? I’ve seen several at Barnes & Noble that look fairly good but you never know, and I don’t want to take a risk on an expensive hardcover(as these usually are).
Oh, there are TONS of more scholarly books like this. This one is written specifically for kids; it’s $15.99 at full price.
