Here at BOOKGASM, we can’t ignore zines – the indie magazines you can’t find on the racks at grocery stores because they’re funded by someone’s beer money rather than a megacorporation. Here are three new issues worth your time and spare change:
• SKYSCRAPER #19 – When it comes to indie music, SKYSCRAPER beats them all, including MAGNET, in my opinion. Each issue is super-thick and is bound like a trade paperback. This one has interviews with and/or features on such under-the-mainstream-radar bands as Mono, VCR, The Oranges Band and Spacehorse, plus something like 80 pages just for reviews. Order and learn more here.
• THE HUNGOVER GOURMET #9 – Like food? Booze? Travel? Fun? Then you’ll dig Dan Taylor’s HUNGOVER GOURMET. This issue
includes a Philly cheesesteak tour, Trader Vic’s, disgusting eateries on NYC’s 14th St. of yesteryear and several reviews, including Budweiser Extra (my favorite part of the issue). Order and learn more here.
• HITCH: THE JOURNAL OF POP CULTURE ABSURDITY #37 – Lastly, I can’t leave out HITCH, primarily because it’s mine! This issue is centered around “Cinematic Guilty Pleasures,” including a career overview of redneck auteur Hal Needham (CANNONBALL RUN), our breakfast with porn star Ron Jeremy, the true story behind FOOTLOOSE, the history of
the real-life AMITYVILLE HORROR house, how to make a SEX MACHINE (that’s a movie, folks), plus the usual mix of shorter bits, comics and loads of reviews. Order and learn more here.
