Do you Sudoku?

sudoku reviewUSA TODAY reports that the Japanese puzzle game Sudoku is sweeping America by storm as several Sudoku books climb the bestseller charts.

Two weeks ago, I hadn’t even heard of the word, and now there’s like 50 books available on the subject, including SUDOKU FOR DUMMIES, THE OFFICIAL BOOK OF SUDOKU and AN ASSLOAD OF SUDOKU, VOL. 3.

Alright, so I made that last one up. But apparently Sudoku is a numerical logic puzzle wherein you have to fill in a series of 3×3 squares with the numerals 1 – 9 so that … well, each one has to … horizontally and vertically and … oh, hell, it’s more work to explain it than it is to do it. And it looks like a lot of work to do it. I flipped through one of these at Borders and just looking it made my head hurt. And now writing about it brings that headache straight back. I don’t even have the patience for Jumble.

They had a piece on this puzzle on the local news. They claimed they handed copies of the puzzle to a dozen random people on the train and most them finished in about 20 minutes. The next day I decided to try one and it took me about 10 minutes to figure out how was supposed to figure out where the first number went. Then it took me 5 more minutes to figure out where the second number went. Then I spent about another 20 minutes working on it before I realzied I had made a total mess of the thing and I gave up. Those people on the train must’ve either cheated or have been on their way to the local MENSA meeting. I’ve tried to do thema few times since then nad haven’t had much luck. But I refuse to get a book to give me hints on how to do a damn puzzle in the local paper.

I’m with you. When I think of other things I could be doing with 20 minutes, Sudoku is right down the list with mowing the yard.
