Salvaged: The Art of Jason Felix

I had never heard of Jason Felix before SALVAGED: THE ART OF JASON FELIX landed at my door. Apparently he’s a video game artist, which surprises me, because on the basis of this book, I’d think his employment was limited to conjuring up fucking nightmares.

The impressive works on display in this handsome art title are a mix of found-items sculpture, photography and collage, with typography tricks culled from the pages of the late RAY GUN magazine. It’s a style informed as much by the SANDMAN covers of Dave McKean as it is the album covers of record label 4AD.

These pieces are cool, yet disturbing, with most of the subjects looking as if they would be perfectly at home inside PAN’S LABYRINTH. Many are faceless, assuming they have faces at all. There’s a dirty-looking woman whose mouth is a keyhole; an eyeless head whose mouth contains nails for teeth; a plastic mannequin with hollow eye sockets, from which blood seeps.

From the looks of it, one might expect the work of a serial killer who gets off on Fritz Lang, but Felix appears to be as normal as you or I. He simply has a vivid, twisted imagination — one he knows how to put to good use. Unable to shake the pictures you see in SALVAGED? Quality art should get under your skin. —Rod Lott

Sexy-Terrifying! I bought this at ComicCon and it is the most exquisite and twisted art I have seen in years. Felix is a young virtuoso and an artist to watch. I’m pretty sure Guillermo Del Toro has been cribbing his stuff for years. Good Sandman allusion, I wish DC would reissue those and have Felix illustrate … Jason Felix makes John Van Fleet look like a bitch! There I said it.
