Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters and the Birth of the Comic Book

men of tomorrow gerald jones reviewNow out in paperback, Gerald Jones’ MEN OF TOMORROW reads like the true story of Michael Chabon’s KAVALIER AND CLAY, because, in a way, it is.

The non-fiction work details how a few pornographers with ties to the Mafia accidentally created the comic book and made a killing off it, all at the unfortunate expense of the writers and artists. The main focus of the book (and, incidentally, the saddest) is how SUPERMAN creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster were screwed over for decades, even if they proved to be questionably talented one-hit wonders. BATMAN’s Bob Kane is portrayed as a credit-hogging asshole, while WONDER WOMAN’s William Moulton Marston was a bondage-loving, mack-daddy crackpot.

Once you get past the laborious history lesson at the first, this is fascinating, eye-opening stuff, as entertaining as it is well-researched.
