Get Animated!: Creating Professional Cartoon Animation on Your Home Computer

Neither being an animator nor ever intending to be one, I can’t vouch for the effectiveness of GET ANIMATED!: CREATING PROFESSIONAL CARTOON ANIMATION ON YOUR HOME COMPUTER, but if I were going to throw my hat into that ring, Tim Maloney’s how-to seems like the way to go.

His technical, but still easy-to-follow tutorial covers everything from generating ideas and putting them to paper (as words) to storyboarding and character design. Then comes the nitty gritty of the actual animation process, one that only ends after copious editing, sound mixing, color timing and — drum roll, please — exhbition, hopefully leading to a professional sale.

The book is heavy on illustrated examples, both to drive home important points and to showcase what to and not to do (i.e. an ill-fated pitch for one of his series includes a bare-breasted “baby prostitute”). An accompanying DVD should help navigating the waters easier. —Rod Lott
