I'll add Saint Johnson to my never ending list of books to look for.

I'm with you Max - I watch The Great Escape whenever it comes on TV its one of those films that can be watched on a loop and never be bored. Plus that cast is none to shabby.

Burnett is a great writer, and as important as Hammett, Chandler and Cain.
The book that truly cries out for reprinting -- to my knowledge, there was never even a paperback -- is SAINT JOHNSON, his Wyatt Earp novel, based on research Burnett did with survivors of that era (I think he may have beat Stuart Lake to the punch). The book was published around the same time as IRON MAN and is the source for a number of the Earp films. Despite the names being changed, it's probably the most accurate and unflinching version of the Earp story out there.

This is the writer who gave us LITTLE CAESAR, HIGH SIERRA and THE ASPHALT JUNGLE. Who was one of the screenwriters of SCARFACE and often adapted his own stuff to the screen. Christ, he wrote THE GREAT ESCAPE!

Why is he so little known today?
