Man, that’s a deal. I could never penetrate THE INVISIBLES and PREACHER was too much for me, but SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE was a great book, and I’ve heard good things about FABLES and LUCIFER. I may have to pick this up for the price point alone. It’s a great way to jump in and see what works for you.

FABLES is great, but the artwork is so terrible it’s hard for me to fully recommend it. The covers are always open, but then you open the book and it’s like you’ve been transported back to the pre-Vertigo days of DC Sophisticated Suspense horror comics. I wish Willingham was drawing this one himself. Does anybody remember the great Eros series IRONWOOD which was written and illustrated by Willingham? That was a great series. I never imagined centaur sex could be so cool.

I disagree: the art in FABLES is terrific and appropriate to the comic’s tone. A friend told me Willingham is a much better writer than illustrator, and I have to agree.
