The Astounding Wolf-Man: Volume 2

astwolfman2For those who came in late: Millionaire Gary Hampton was bitten by a wolf. At night, he becomes a wolf-man, but the good kind. When Zechariah, the vampire he was training with felt betrayed, the bloodsucker killed Hampton's wife. But a misunderstanding on Hampton's daughter's part has her believing her father killed Mom, so now Hampton is running for his life. And so begins Robert Kirkman's THE ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN: VOLUME 2, in which Hampton is forced to play the part of THE FUGITIVE while heading back to the site of his original bite, to come face-to-snout with the elder wolf in hopes of learning exactly how one goes about exacting revenge on a vampire. Along the way, he's pursued by government agents attempting to bring him in. Hampton also runs afoul of the superhero Invincible (in a crossover of another Kirkman series), and attempts to let his daughter know that she's got it all wrong. This'll prove difficult, as she's hired someone herself to kill him. I love everything about this book. The concept is killer, the writing is snappy, Jason Howard's angular art is addictive, and even the colors are beautiful. Admittedly, the title's blend of horror, action and family drama isn't going to be for everyone, but Kirkman and company nail the unusual mix. VOLUME 3 — which, from the looks of things, will have Hampton squaring off against a trio of superpowered villains — can't arrive fast enough. —Rod Lott Buy it at Amazon.
