Supernatural: Rising Son

I didn't find SUPERNATURAL: RISING SON to be as much fun as WildStorm's previous graphic novel, SUPERNATURAL: ORIGINS, based on the hit horror TV series (well, a hit by The CW standards, at least). But for fans of the show — and even those who've never seen it, but ache for good horror comics — it's worth the purchase. This six-issue collection follows unconventional father John Winchester as he continues to hunt down whoever/whatever killed his wife, and he has their two young children, Sam and Dean, in tow. They travel from town to town, where work may or may not await them, but monsters always do. Here, witches and demons of the female persuasion seem to be fright central for the Winchester clan. Those leery of seeing children put in peril may not dig it, but this being a prequel to the show, you know not a damn thing is going to happen to Sam or Dean, at least not physically. Emotionally? Well, that's another story. Peter Johnson and Rebecca Dessertine sharing scripting duties, for which Diego Olmos does justice in his often cinematic art. SUPERNATURAL creator closes out the book with a four-page story featuring the show's comic-relief GHOSTFACERS characters. It's pretty juvenile, but then again, so are they. —Rod Lott Buy it at Amazon.
