Jonah Hex: Guns of Vengeance
JONAH HEX: GUNS OF VENGEANCE is another six-shooter of Western comics excellence, collecting issues 7 through 12 of DC’s current run of the facially scarred Civil War vet turned bounty hunter.
As with the previous collection, FACE FULL OF VIOLENCE, Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray are at the top of the game, telling stories so cinematic, they leap off the page. Rather than getting bogged down in a lengthy story arc, these half-dozen issues are all self-contained, stand-alone stories.
In the first, Hex exacts revenge on a band of thieves who’ve murdered a newly married man and stolen his rifle. The second has him giving a child killer his due, while the third takes a supernatural, fever-dream route.
The fourth and best – and also the most gruesome – is “Gator Bait,” in which an ignorant, inbred, DELIVERANCE-style family throws people in the alligator-infested swamp over which their house sits. The mysterious Ed Diablo costars in the fifth tale, while the last has Hex taking on a quintet of Mormon-hating murderers.
Each issue is drawn by a different artist; they all have a unique style, but each is pitch-perfect for the tale they bring to life, with action leaping off the page. And those tales are told so well – with necessary violence – that I’m totally in love with this series. –Rod Lott
