Jack of Fables: Jack of Hearts

jack fables jack hearts reviewJACK OF FABLES: JACK OF HEARTS picks up where its predecessor left off: with fairy-tale-turned-Hollywood-star Jack – known aliases include Jack Be Nimble, Jack the Giant Killer and Little Jack Horner – on the run after having escaped a prison town for wayward fables. After he tells fellow fugitives Pecos Bill, John Henry and Alice in Wonderland about the short time he was known as Jack Frost, he’s off to Vegas, baby, Vegas!

On his way, he befriends a strange man with a stranger name: Gary the Pathetic Fallacy. Not looking unlike Edgar Allan Poe, Gary has the power to make inanimate objects come to life. A cash-strapped Jack sees dollar signs in this ability and so they head straight for the casinos and make those roulette balls work for them.

It pays big for a while, until casino bosses get wise and throw him out, allowing Jack to meet a comely, loaded blonde for whom he falls. Being in Vegas, they get a quickie wedding, but their love is short-lived, thanks to the appearance of a brain-eating MILF named Lady Luck.

Filled with sex, shootouts and ‘splosions, JACK OF FABLES continues the strong, sassy tradition of its sister title FABLES, both guided by the cheeky wit of writer/creator Bill Willingham, who – quite remarkably – still manages to wring huge dollops of imagination out of his golden concept. Matthew Sturges also writes, and the expert art is provided by Tony Akins, Steve Leialoha and Andrew Pepoy; James Jean again delivers the greatest covers in the comics biz.

Now two volumes deep into the JACK spinoffs, I now look forward to the next installment as much as I do FABLES. –Rod Lott
