The new manga GURU GURU PON-CHAN is one super goofy story that will appeal mostly to girls up to 13 years old. One must certainly loves dogs and THE PRINCESS DIARIES to be fully delighted by this book.
Little Ponta is an adorable and sometimes troublesome puppy who is much loved by her family. However, her life gets a major twist when she gets a treat called a “guru guru bone.” After nibbling the bone, she turns into a human girl! Of course, she develops a major puppy-love crush on a human boy, and as you’d expect, things just get more complicated.
In this first volume, most of the humor revolves around the unexpected changes of a dog turning human and her behavior. It is very odd and silly most of the time (like the images of a naked little girl pooping on the yard, for one). As time goes by, she grows. That means when she turns into human, she is a teenager as well. And what happens? She falls in love. From that point on, it starts to go down the hill.
It’s mostly over-the-top, super-exaggerated art, which can sell the silliness well but can’t help in the emotional department. All the sweetness and cuteness of falling in love can’t quite translate through the art of this. That said, the survival love story between human and dog isn’t adorable, as the author wants it to be. But dog lovers (not in a beastiality way) might find its humor and story to be cute and … well, cute.
