Long a character in the periphery, the janitor Flycatcher becomes the focus of FABLES: THE GOOD PRINCE, a nine-issue arc that’s one of the series’ most epic yet; this is its 10th trade paperback collection.
Flycatcher, being the former Frog Prince, learns of how he’s been wronged in life for centuries, and vows to man up and take vengeance. With the help of the ghost of Lancelot, he gains armor and sword (from the stone, naturally), and delves into the land of the dead, where he recruits an army of empty, formerly evil souls to help him defeat his enemy.
In between this ambitious story — well-told, with more than a touch of the supernatural — is a one-off issue dealing with the wolf cub children of Bigby Wolf and Snow White. Whereas the Flycatcher plot is serious, this standalone tale is played for kicks.
It’s hard for FABLES to be bad. It happens only rarely, and this isn’t one of those times. Bill Willingham has a clear grasp of these characters and an equally clear direction for them. His vision is well-supported by artists Mark Buckingham, Steve Leialoha, Aaron Alexovich and Andrew Pepoy. It’s not for nothing a dozen Eisner awards have been bestowed on this series — one of the very best comics has to offer. —Rod Lott
