Dark Tower: Fall of Gilead

I’m not saying DARK TOWER: FALL OF GILEAD is a bad graphic novel. It’s just bad for me. Three times I have tried to get into it, and three times I have failed. Then again, I’m not exactly a DARK TOWER aficionado. Thus far, I’ve only read the first two novels in Stephen King’s acclaimed, seven-book fantasy epic, and exactly none of the comics, in which FALL OF GILEAD is the fourth story arc.

This story is a prequel, and has something to do with the life of gunslinger Roland and his family being made miserable by a sorcerer named Marten. He’s introduced in a prologue that establishes his menace, but little beyond that. You’re left to your own devices, and I’m afraid if you’re jumping in unawares like me, you may be hopelessly lost.

That’s not to say GILEAD isn’t filled with some fantastic images, because it is, including all sorts of blood feuds and beasties, courtesy of Richard Isanove. Robin Furth and Peter David’s story obvious is neck-deep in King’s world, so for those who already wade in such waters, rewards likely await. —Rod Lott
