Classic Bible Stories

On the seventh day, God rested. And sometime after that, like thousands of years, he gave you CLASSIC BIBLE STORIES.

In this hardcover reprint, Titan Books collects two complete stories from EAGLE, a British comics magazine of yesteryear: “Jesus: The Road of Courage” and “Mark: The Youngest Disciple.” Each was serialized at a page per issue, and tell the tales with expected reverence, but also unexpected solid art. Usually, Bible comics skimp on illustration, as if the story can overcome all deficiencies; here, they’re afforded every bit the time and care as EAGLE’s other features.

It would be nice if this volume — marked with an “I” on the spine, suggesting more to come — made room for an introduction to tell EAGLE’s story before the Biblical characters’. Without it, I can’t recommend it beyond members of the serious churchgoing set, who aren’t likely to visit a site with a name like ours. —Rod Lott
