Chi’s Sweet Home: Volume 1

Kanata Konami’s CHI’S SWEET HOME: VOLUME 1 is a little different than the other manga Vertical Inc. imports: It’s cute. So adorable and inoffensive, in fact, that once I read it, I put it straight in the hands of my pet-loving 10-year-daughter. I can’t exactly do that with the same publisher’s PEEPO CHOO.

Befitting of something that would appeal to her age group, the plot is simple: A stray cat is found by the Yamada family and brought into their home, where the tabby performs acts of innocent mischief — for example, peeing where she shouldn’t. Chapters are quick, bright and colorful, with only the cat’s thoughts rendered as baby talk being the only annoyance. And having CHI in your house sure beats the real thing. —Rod Lott
