book whoreShe’s back, pimpin’ out notable new releases to place on your radar!

EDEN by Tony Monchinski — Seemingly overnight, the world transforms into a barren wasteland ravaged by plague and overrun by hordes of flesh-eating zombies. A small band of desperate men and women stand their ground in a fortified compound in what had been Queens, New York. They’ve named their sanctuary Eden. Harris — the unusual honest man in this dead world — races against time to solve a murder while maintaining his own humanity. Because the danger posed by the dead and diseased mass clawing at Eden’s walls pales in comparison to the deceit and treachery Harris faces within.

DYING TO LIVE: LIFE SENTENCE by Kim Paffenroth — At the end of the world, a handful of survivors banded together in a museum-turned-compound surrounded by the living dead. The community established rituals and rites of passage, customs to keep themselves sane, to help them integrate into their new existence. Twelve years later, the community has reclaimed more of the city and has settled into a fairly secure life in their compound. Zoey is a girl coming of age in this undead world, learning new roles and new sacrifices. But even bigger surprises lay in wait, for some of the walking dead are beginning to remember who they are, who they’ve lost and, even worse, what they’ve done.

WATER WITCH by Deborah LeBlanc — Dunny knew from an early age what it meant to be an outsider. Her special abilities earned her many names, like freak and water witch. So she vowed to keep her powers a secret. But now her talents may be the only hope of two missing children. A young boy and girl have vanished, feared lost in the mysterious bayous of Louisiana. But they didn’t just disappear; they were taken. And amid the ghosts and spirits of the swamp, there is a danger worse than any other, one with very special plans for the children — and for anyone who dares to interfere.

THE YEAR’S BEST FANTASY AND HORROR 2008 edited by Ellen Datlow, Kelly Link and Gavin J. Grant — As in every year since 1988, the editors tirelessly scoured story collections, magazines, and anthologies worldwide to compile a delightful, diverse feast of tales and poems. On this anniversary, the editors have increased the size of  the collection to 300,000 words of fiction and poetry, including works by Billy Collins, Ted Chiang, Karen Joy Fowler, Elizabeth Hand, Glen Hirshberg, Joyce Carol Oates, and new World Fantasy Award winner M. Rickert. It includes impeccably researched summations of the field by the editors, and articles by Edward Bryant, Charles de Lint and Jeff VanderMeer on media, music and graphic novels.

TEATRO GROTTESCO by Thomas Ligotti — Ligotti follows the literary tradition that began with Edgar Allan Poe: portraying characters that are outside of anything that might be called normal life, depicting strange locales far off the beaten track, and rendering a grim vision of human existence as a perpetual nightmare. Just by entering his unique world where odd little towns and dark sectors are peopled with clowns, manikins and hideous puppets, and where tormented individuals and blackly comical eccentrics play out their doom, is to risk your own vision of the world.

THE WOLFMAN by Nicholas Pekearo — Marlowe Higgins is a werewolf. For years he struggled with his affliction, until he found a way to use this unfortunate curse for good: He only kills really bad people. Settling at last in the small town of Evelyn, Higgins works at a local restaurant and even has a friend in a police detective. One night everything changes. It turns out Marlowe Higgins isn’t the only monster lurking in the area. A fiendish serial killer, known as the Rose Killer, is brutally murdering young girls all around the county. Higgins targets the killer as his next victim, but on the night of the full moon, things go drastically wrong.

UNDERGROUND by Craig Spector — For seven good friends, life was nothing but drugs and music and fun … until high school was over and it was time for one final party before moving on. Creepy, abandoned, isolated Custis Manor seemed like the perfect place for their blowout. But something watched their festivities … something corrupt and voracious. On that terrifying night, seven young lives were shattered forever. Now, 20 years later, the survivors must return to confront the demons of their past, to do battle with a nightmare beyond their comprehension … and a hideous peril more dreadful than death.

VAMPIRE$ by John Steakley — The cult classic is back. You don’t just kill vampires for the money — you do it because somebody has to. Some jobs just suck. This one bites. But nobody does it better than Jack Crow. His crack team of hunters takes down the blood suckers with a lethal combination of cojones and crossbows. After members of Jack’s team are ambushed and slaughtered, however, the survivors need to rethink their strategy. With a new recruit from the Vatican — a priest who’s not afraid to wield a stake — and a sharpshooter loaded up with silver bullets, it’s payback time.

ZOMBIE CSU: THE FORENSICS OF THE LIVING DEAD by Jonathan Mayberry — What would happen if, tomorrow, corpses across the nation began springing up out of their graves and terrorizing the living? Employing hard science and solid police work — not to mention jaw-dropping (literally!) humor — ZOMBIE CSU is the only guide you need to make it through alive. At last you can: Investigate zombie crime scenes. Examine the psychology of the zombie and develop a perp profile. Observe medical science pros as they probe felled zombies for forensic clues. Devise a zombie apocalypse survival scorecard and more! Complete with lists of must-see zombie flicks from around the globe and tons of tips for kicking undead butt!

HORROR FILMS by Colin Odell and Michelle Le Blanc — From horror cinema’s beginnings in the late 19th century to the latest splatter films, from the chills of the ghost film to the terror of the living dead, there is more than enough here to keep fans awake at night. Among the many films discussed are the popular DRACULA, EVIL DEAD, FRANKENSTEIN, HALLOWEEN, RINGU, SCREAM and THE SIXTH SENSE, as well as the more unusual BLACK CAT, THE LIVING DEAD GIRL, NANG NAK, ROUGE and LES YEUX SANS VISAGE. The guide also profiles such popular directors as Dario Argento, John Carpenter, Wes Craven, David Cronenberg, Hideo Nakata and Sam Raimi, as well as cult directors from around the world, including Coffin Joe, Jean Rollin and Michele Soavi. Includes a DVD of three horror shorts!
