All the news that’s fit to capsulize!
TIME TO GET ‘FAT,’ KIDS
Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly’s delightful LITTLE LIT series gets the greatest-hit treatment when BIG FAT LITTLE LIT hits stores Sept. 7. This comic collection is comprised of stories from the three bestselling volumes to date (LITTLE LIT: FOLKLORE & FAIRY TALE FUNNIES, LITTLE LIT: STRANGE STORIES FOR STRANGE KIDS and LITTLE LIT: IT WAS A DARK AND SILLY NIGHT, should the question arise during Trivial Pursuit) either written or illustrated by such names as Daniel Clowes, Jules Feiffer, Neil Gaiman, David Sedaris, J. Otto Seibold, Maurice Sendak, Lemony Snicket and Spiegelman. All those books are good, are not just for kids and were oversized hardbacks, whereas BIG FAT will be a small paperback. Wait, I’m starting to confuse myself. Aw, cripes, just grab a juice box and don’t overthink it.
それは自由、模造である。
Check your local Barnes & Noble for a free manga sampler from Del Rey, showcasing some 20-odd titles of those comics you have to read backwards. It’s more than likely located by that part of the store where all the cheapskates loaf around and read for hours so they don’t have to buy anything but overpriced coffee. I’d give you further details on the contents, but someone ripped it off from my desk. Suffice to say, big eyes are probably involved. Oh, and manga is not to be confused with the word “mange.” Just so you know.
GETTING A WOODY FOR THIS ‘SPLINTER’
I’m not sure how it happened, but somewhere between the first and second book of TOM CLANCY’S SPLINTER CELL series by David Michaels, I became a huge fan of its James Bondian exploits in our terror-ridden age. First there was TOM CLANCY’S SPLINTER CELL, then TOM CLANCY’S SPLINTER CELL: OPERATION BARRACUDA, and now, come Nov. 7, we get TOM CLANCY’S SPLINTER CELL: CHECKMATE. And I can’t wait. Because for mass-market thrillers based on a video game and piggybacking off a big-name author who didn’t write them, the series can’t be beat!
WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEBBON…
Christopher Golden and Tim Lebbon have teamed up to co-author a pair of fantasy novels for Bantam Spectra, set in “places which hold secrets almost beyond belief.” The first book, MIND THE GAP: A NOVEL OF THE HIDDEN CITIES, won’t be out until 2008. Having liked recent books by each – THE MYTH HUNTERS and BERSERK, respectively – we look forward to seeing what kind of craziness these two can cook up together.
ONCE UPON A TIME…
In an effort to lure more readers to its Eisner Award-winning comic series FABLES, Vertigo/DC Comics is reprinting the first issue on Oct. 11 at a can’t-beat-it price of 25 cents. Additionally, the special issue will contain a preview of its first hardcover spinoff, FABLES: 1001 NIGHTS OF SNOWFALL. We here at BOOKGASM love FABLES, if you haven’t been paying attention. C’mon, people: 25 cents! You can afford that.
UP YOURS, CHRISTINE!
Chimericana Books is readying its fourth annual weird fiction anthology. Due around Christmas, this year’s CHIMERAWORLD will revolve around the theme of “things to do in a bizarro car.” Said editor Mike Philbin, “It’s about car lust, it’s about car warfare, it’s about car murder, car revenge, car conscience. Cars are the true horror of modern living; there is no alternative. People are born in cars, grow old and fat in them. People die in their cars. The world passes them by; unknown, unnoticed.” Man, if that doesn’t sound like Yuletide reading, what does? To get you in the festive mood, Philbin has prepped a special “retrospective pack” of the first three CHIMERAWORLD anthologies just for BOOKGASM, with excerpts from each volume. You can download this exclusive PDF right here, but be warned: The material is very adult. (And in saying that, I bet I just doubled the number of downloads.)
TODAY’S ‘DEATH CLOUD’ FORECAST
Paul Malmont, author of THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL (a book we hope to get around to talking about someday) e-mailed BOOKGASM to let us know “your campaign seems to be working. I hit the L.A. Times bestseller list this weekend! #12!” That’s great, Paul, but sorry the 11 books that did better than yours were all by James Patterson. That’s gotta sting.
AS IN US
Oh, and someone very special turns one year old on Monday. Come back then and read all about it, won’t you? It’ll be very!
