HEADING WEST
Next year, Dorchester Publishing will launch a “Classic Film Collection” paperback series of Western novels that inspired Western movies. It begins in February with the release of THE SEARCHERS by Alan LeMay, which became the John Ford classic starring John Wayne. Other books to follow include DESTRY RIDES AGAIN by Max Brand, THE MAN FROM LARAMIE by Thomas T. Flynn and THE UNFORGIVEN by Alan LeMay.
GET INTO ‘THE FOLD’
Erotica author Polly Frost (DEEP INSIDE: EXTREME EROTIC FANTASIES) has embarked on a new venture: an online softcore sci-fi web series called THE FOLD. Episode one debuts Aug. 4. “We’re hoping THE FOLD is a little bit BARBARELLA, a little bit REVENGE OF THE NERDS, a little bit LIQUID SKY,” Frost said. “Fantasy, sex, humor; storylines, fresh characters, and tension … and all on a budget that wouldn’t buy you a used car, of course.” You can read our review at MicroCinemaScene.
‘SHOMI’ WHAT YOU’VE GOT
Stephen King will be handpicking one lucky filmmaker’s book trailer to get actual theater screen time. In a new contest from Dorchester Publishing and Circle of Seven Productions, participants are asked to create a trailer for any title in the SHOMI line of fantasy novels. King will judge the entries; the winner’s work will be shown at a New York City film premiere and also at a theater in his or her hometown. “We’re thrilled to offer filmmakers a means to broadcast their gifts,” said Brooke Borneman, Dorchester director of sales and marketing, “and hope that the contest gives the winner a platform that will propel his or her film career to new heights.”
DO YOU SUVUDU?
Random House has launched Suvudu, a new website “catering to news from all sci-fi and fantasy creative media — books, audiobooks, gaming, manga, comic books and movies!” Reviews, interviews, podcasts and videos are among the regular content, authored by industry talents.
THE ‘PEARL’ IS IN THE LIVER!
HarperCollins’ EOS sci-fi line offers its latest free e-book download: Karen Traviss’ CITY OF PEARL. Grab it while the grabbing’s good.
VID GETS ‘SPANKED’
A trailer for editor Rachel Kramer Bussel’s anthology SPANKED: RED-CHEEKED EROTICA was yanked from websites Vimeo and Flickr hours after uploading, even though the clip has no nudity or sex. It does, however, consist of clothed models being spanked as Bussel reads from the book. The author said she wanted the trailer “to appeal to as many people as possible. I wasn’t making pornography.” Judge for yourself, curious ones:
