All the news that’s fit to capsulize!
UNIVERSAL GETS GOLDEN
In Hollywood’s bid for fast-tracking any project that sounds even remotely like LOST, Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to TALENT, the Boom Studios comic book by Christopher Golden (THE MYTH HUNTERS), Tom Sniegoski and Paul Azaceta. In the four-issue series, a lone survivor of a plane crash begins to exhibit the talents (hence, the title) of those who perished.
THE HORROR! THE HORROR AWARDS!
Nominees for the 12th annual International Horror Guild Awards have been announced. Among the competitors for Best Novel are Elizabeth Kostova’s THE HISTORIAN and Bret Easton Ellis’ LUNAR PARK. Is that even horror? Regardless, winners will be named in November.
‘POP’ GOES THE YA SHELF
Manga purveyors TOKYOPOP are entering the world of fiction with a teen-oriented, fantasy-heavy “Pop Fiction” line this October. The first four titles are Keiichi Sigsawa’s KINO NO TABI: BOOK ONE OF THE BEAUTIFUL WORLD (an eight-volume bestseller in Japan), Wolfgang and Heike Hohlbein’s MAGIC MOON (the first in a trilogy), Ichiro Sakaki’s SCRAPPED PRINCESS: A TALE OF DESTINY (based on the anime series) and Mishio Fukazawa’s WITCHES’ FOREST: THE ADVENTURES OF DUAN SURK (from the game/comics/TV series). TOKYOPOP publisher Mike Kiley says they’re great because they “engage kids openly with stories from all over the planet that embody the beautiful messiness of life.” We think they’re great because the covers are works of art.
‘FRANK’LY, THAT SUCKS
Sources Who Know These Sort of Things tell us that while Dean Koontz is indeed writing the third book of his successful FRANKENSTEIN series all by himself, you should not expect it this summer as initially promised. Instead, we’re hearing spring of ’07. Unless, of course, he comes up with yet another ODD THOMAS sequel before then.
