WITHOUT REASON
James Reasoner – author of the recent BOOKGASM-approved DEATH HEAD CROSSING and DUST DEVILS – experienced tragedy last week when his and his wife’s home burned to the ground. They lost everything, but – thankfully – their lives. For details on how you can help, visit Bill Crider’s blog.
EONS OF EOS!
To celebrate its first decade in business, sci-fi/fantasy imprint Eos Books has picked 10 of its own titles it deems classics, which will be revealed each month on their website. The first pick in the “10 Years – 10 Books” promotion is Walter M. Miller Jr.’s A CANTICLE FOR LEIBOWITZ. For further celebration, Eos will be giving away select titles as e-books; Robin Hobb’s SHAMAN’S CROSSING: THE SOLDIER SON TRILOGY, BOOK ONE is the first downloadble, for a limited time.
NOW IF WE CAN JUST GET THE WRITERS TO QUIT STRIKING …
Sean Chercover’s BIG CITY, BAD BLOOD is headed to television. Well, at least the rights have been sold, but remember: They don’t call it “development hell” for nothing. Since our crime columnist Bruce Grossman named it the best novel of 2007, you can imagine we look forward to seeing it hit the small screen.
CUPS OF COFFEE NOT INCLUDED
On March 3, former Random House editor Daniel Menaker will debut as host of TITLEPAGE, a new, downloadable Internet show that will interview authors of all kinds. The initial season will be comprised of six episodes. “TITLEPAGE is the perfect way to share my enthusiasm for books and their authors,” Menaker said. “I’ve always sought out literary conversations, and I think we can make them surprising and entertaining for anyone who might want to stop by.”

EXCERPT FROM A PRESS RELEASE ABOUT A BOOK WE WON’T BE REVIEWING
from LEAD LIKE A PIRATE!: LEADERSHIP SECRETS OF THE PIRATES OF ST. CROIX by Christopher Novak
“With a hint of old English and a thread of historical truth, the book shares 5 Secrets of Tiger Eye Taylor, captain of the Ebony Ghost, and a pirate legend for turning diversity into strength, speed into advantage and heart into leadership. His 5 Secrets – the Captain, the Crew, the Mission, the Strategy and the Treasure – are revealed through a series of illustrated high seas adventures. Each adventure ends with a challenge to evaluate a specific situation and select the best course of action from among several options. Its nice that Eos is pimping out its 10 favorite books, but what’s in it for readers? If Eos really wanted to celebrate these classics, it would release special versions at discounted prices.
People need to not only be aware of these books, but they need to keep getting into the hands of new readers. Surely the rights to a 48-year-old book can’t be so expensive that you can’t do your part for new readers.
Cool books reviews. Can you do such reviews for movies also?
For movies, we have a sister site over at Hitch Magazine, although it’s not updated every day like BOOKGASM is. But activity has picked up there lately, and will continue to, provided I can find the time.
