dangerous bookstore 1WORLD’S MOST DANGEROUS UPDATE
It’s official: Our report last week on The World’s Most Dangerous Bookstore is BOOKGASM’s most popular post ever, judging from the incoming traffic thanks to Wired magazine and others. I’ve read comments at several blogs linking to it, stating that they’d like to make a pilgrimage to Oklahoma City just to witness it for themselves. Don’t! As much as we’d love to have you, the article was written in 1996, and my co-author informed me last week that the place indeed burned to the ground a few years back. And if you’ve seen the pictures, you can understand why.

edgar awardOSCARS? WHO NEEDS OSCARS?
What with all the other book-related awards going on, that is. First up, check out the submissions for the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers’ inaugural Scribe Awards, which include titles we’ve covered here, like SUPERMAN RETURNS, ULTRAVIOLET, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT: RUMORS OF THE UNDEAD and SNAKES ON A PLANE. Then, see who the Mystery Writers of America digs for its 2007 Edgar Allan Poe Awards, to be announced April 26. Stephen King is being honored as this year’s Grandmaster, and nominees include BOOKGASM-reviewed HOLMES ON THE RANGE, THE DEEP BLUE ALIBI, MANHUNT: THE 12-DAY CHASE FOR LINCOLN’S KILLER, THE BEAUTIFUL CIGAR GIRL, DEATH DO US PART and MURDER AT THE FOUL LINE.

SHE’S A MAN, MAN!
You can hear Norah Vincent talk about her 18 months disguised as a man in a podcast from Penguin USA. It’s adapted from her (his?) nonfiction book, SELF-MADE MAN. Expect dick jokes?

R.I.P. E. HOWARD HUNT
Watergate figure E. Howard Hunt has gone to his grave, but BOOKGASM readers know him better as the “crap author” of such badly written spy epics as FESTIVAL FOR SPIES and LOVERS ARE LOSERS. Our resident crime paperback archivist Bruce Grossman says he will not be missed. –Rod Lott
