All the news that’s fit to capsulize!
THE FOURTH PROTOCOL
Polls are closed in the 2007 Weblog Awards, and BOOKGASM finished fourth (out of 10 nominees) for Best Literature Blog. The winner was Neil Gaiman, whom we never expected to beat, anyway. (The diary of a dead guy, on the other hand…) Congrats to our fellow nominees, and thanks to “King Rat” for nominating us in the first place and to everyone who voted and helped spread the word! Today, fourth; tomorrow, the world!
SELF-PROMOTION CORNER
BOOKGASM merits two pages of discussion in the new book THE BOOKAHOLICS’ GUIDE TO BOOK BLOGS, by Rebecca Gillieron and Catheryn Kilgarriff, within the chapter “Fan Blogs, Obsessives and the Extreme.” We’re honored to be a part of this incisive look at “a new and entirely independent literary force,” and even more so to be featured right alongside our friends at Curt Purcell’s Groovy Age of Horror.
HOLIDAY SHOPPING MADE EASY
Remember that if you shop at Amazon this holiday season, please click any of our links to take you there first. That way, BOOKGASM benefits from any order your place, which helps keep this site alive. To help expedite holiday shopping, Amazon now has its ongoing Holiday Toy List and Gift Central set up.
GOOD NEWS FOR CHEAPSKATES!
Here’s a great idea: AuthorArcs is a site offering free e-books of as-yet-unpublished works. Being new, pickings are slim, but you can get noir mystery DEAD ON from Robert W. Walker and J.A. Konrath’s THE LIST (a technothriller in which science brings historical figures like Vlad the Impaler and Jack the Ripper back to life) delivered straight to your inbox.
MORE GOOD NEWS FOR CHEAPSKATES!
Cyberpunk author Rudy Rucker has made his latest novel POSTSINGULAR available for free download. After being downloaded 13,000 times in the first 24 hours, the Amazon ranking for the actual hardcover moved up 5,000 notches. We smell a new business model.
ACT NOW AND GET A FREE WALLET THAT SAYS ‘BAD MUTHAFUCKA’
Who knew Samuel L. Jackson had a book club? Now that’s some funny shit.
TORPEDO, FULL SPEED AHEAD!
With his hard rock band currently on hiatus, System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan is turning his attention to comic books. Specifically, he launched his online store Torpedo Comics on Nov. 1 – boasting 15 million comics, graphic novels, trade paperbacks and other memorabilia – from a warehouse in Las Vegas, where he lives. Dolmayan said he’s been collecting comics since he was 12, and has such rare titles as the first issues of MARVEL COMICS, GIANT-SIZE X-MEN and SENSATION COMICS, which was the first solo series for Wonder Woman.
‘AND THEN KIRK CAME UP BEHIND SPOCK …’
Fanfiction fans, unite! FanLib.com is a new site that “lets members create and share their own fanstories, videos, art, and other media incorporating the characters they love from film, TV, and books.” They’re kicking off their launch with an array of prizes.
‘DREAM’ ON!
Geoffrey Thorne – author of the forthcoming STAR TREK: TITAN – SWORD OF DAMOCLES – edits a free, online webcomics anthology called GEOFFREY THORNE’S DREAMNASIUM. Currently hosted by Web Comics Nation, it’s a monthly sci-fi/fantasy anthology with two issues already available. –Rod Lott
