All the news that’s fit to capsulize!
DID SOMEBODY SAY MONKEYS?
Pulp lives in ASTONISHING ADVENTURES MAGAZINE, a new, free-for-download e-mag with fiction, interviews and monkeys. The design could use an overhaul, but the staff has its heart in the right place, and those who miss the olden days of dime-mag derring-do should appreciate this spirited revival.
COURTING AUTHORS
Court TV debuts its second season of MURDER BY THE BOOK – which features novelists talking about the crimes that inspired their works – on Nov. 5, and is celebrating with a “Search for the Next Great Crime Writer” contest. Wannabe writers can submit their manuscripts for a chance at winning $5,000 and a publishing contract through Borders. David Baldacci, Sandra Brown and Harlan Coben are among jurists who will make one wordsmith quite lucky.
LOOK, UP ON THE INTERNET!
Coinciding with the release of Kevin J. Anderson’s THE LAST DAYS OF KRYPTON novel – the BOOKGASM review is coming soon – HarperCollins is giving away an authentic chunk of Kryptonite … or at least the prop as used in SUPERMAN RETURNS. Runners-up get a copy of Anderson’s book.
MUSIC TO READ BOOKS BY
Not content with selling all those books, Amazon is now in the MP3 business! Available this instant are more than 2 million songs from more than 180,000 artists from more than 20,000 labels. (That’s an awful lot of “more than”s, no?) Most of the songs are a mere 89 cents – take that, iTunes! – and, best of all, not digitally rights-managed, which mean you’re not limited on playing and burning options. Our current favorites include VHS or Beta’s BRING ON THE COMETS, if we may make a wholehearted recommendation.
LETTING YOU IN ON A ‘SECRET’
To get a better idea of the tone of the recently reviewed THE NAME OF THIS BOOK IS SECRET by Pseudonymous Bosch, look no further than the title’s official website. With its colorful carnival theme, downloadable codes and a game of virtual skeeball, it gets our vote for one of the coolest sites we’ve seen for a corporate-fronted release. –Rod Lott
