Word is Jack Kilborn’s gory thriller AFRAID sends a shiver down your spine. We’ll have to ask Steven Gomez of Copperopolis, Calif., if that’s true, because he’s the one who’s won this contest handily. We’ve got to give it to him; he had an excellent strategy: Having his name picked at random. Genius move!
Plus, with the book, he’s also getting a pair of branded socks that read “AFRAID: It’ll scare you socks off.” We’ll have to ask him if they stay on or not.

I didn’t used to be afraid of the dark OR paranoid, but after reading AFRAID, I think I might be both! What scares me most is the way this author takes the everyday scenarios one takes for granted and creates horrifically terrifying situations that are completely believable. I’ve always liked this author’s (aka JA Konrath) use of imagery and this story follows that same path. I’d venture to say that this particular book reminds me of those first Dean Koontz books that scared the pants off me and made me not want to get out of bed in the dark. The heroes he uses are the everyday people, the ones with the most to lose, and the people that are the ones that step up in the real world when needed. While parts of this book were almost painful to read, the entire story kept me glued to the pages from beginning to end. If you like this book, you should try Konrath’s “Jack” Daniels novels too. Now I’m going to make sure the doors are locked!
I call “plant!” But the book is good so far, so I’ll allow it.
It may indeed be a plant, but so far, the socks are off.
